Man drinking water, utilizing stroke prevention techinques

We’ve gone over how to recognize the symptoms of a stroke when it’s happening, but did you know there are steps you can take to prevent strokes? Strokes remain a leading cause of long term disability among Americans while also being the fifth leading cause of death among adults. Knowing your modifiable risk factors gives you the power of prevention!

The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association advises addressing cigarette smoking, alcohol or drug use, physical inactivity, obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension and diabetes with your doctor to significantly decrease your risk of stroke. Research has also shown that treating obstructive sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation properly can reduce your risk.

Per the American Heart Association, stroke is largely preventable, treatable and beatable. Check out their stroke risk assessment to see if you have any risks you should bring up with your doctor.

The most important aspect of stroke risk production remains keeping up to date with your primary care physician so that they can help you manage any known diagnosis and find/treat any new ones early.
